Level Up Life - What is a Healthy Plate Worksheet
The Level Up Life Game is more than just chores. Our Market Mission and Apron Challenge were designed to include lifestyle discussions like Healhty Plate.

As parents and educators, we all want our kids to grow up healthy and strong. One of the most important habits to teach early is how to eat well — and for preteens, understanding a balanced meal can set them up for a lifetime of good choices.

That’s where the Healthy Plate concept comes in.

What Is the Healthy Plate?

The Healthy Plate is a simple visual guide that shows how to build a balanced meal, focusing on portion sizes and food groups. While many of us know about the USDA’s MyPlate, the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate takes it a step further by emphasizing quality and variety.

Here’s what the Harvard Healthy Plate looks like:

  • Half the plate filled with vegetables and fruits (think colorful, fresh, and whole foods)

  • One-quarter whole grains (like brown rice, whole wheat, or quinoa)

  • One-quarter healthy protein (such as fish, poultry, beans, or nuts)

  • Plus a side of healthy oils (like olive oil) and water to drink

This model avoids processed foods and sugary drinks, promoting real, nutrient-rich foods instead.

Why Is This Important for Preteens?

Preteens are at a stage where they start making more independent food choices — whether at school, with friends, or even cooking at home. Learning about the Healthy Plate helps them:

  • Understand balance, not restriction — It’s not about cutting out favorites, but about enjoying a variety of foods in the right amounts.

  • Build strong bodies and brains — Nutrients from fruits, veggies, and whole grains fuel growth and focus at school.

  • Prevent unhealthy habits — Early lessons reduce risks of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease later in life.

  • Develop food confidence — Kids who know what a healthy meal looks like feel more confident ordering food or helping cook.

How to Teach Preteens the Healthy Plate

The Level Up Life Game was designed to incorporate healthy plate into the market mission and apron challenge! Through the game, we aimed to:

  • Make it visual and fun — download the Healthy Plate worksheet for reference.

  • Talk about food as fuel — Help them understand how what they eat powers their energy and mood.

  • Encourage variety — Challenge your child to try a new fruit or veggie each week in their recipe.

Final Thought

Teaching preteens about the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate isn’t just about today’s meal — it’s about creating a foundation for a lifetime of health, energy, and confidence. The sooner they learn, the stronger and happier they’ll be.

Here’s to raising smart, healthy eaters—one plate at a time!
